New Jersey will not have a statewide requirement for all students to wear masks in school when the next academic year begins and will instead leave it up to individual districts to determine whether to mandate face coverings, Gov. Phil Murphy announced Monday in a major update to the state鈥檚 coronavirus education guidelines.
The move is contingent on there not being any 鈥漝ramatic鈥 deterioration in the state鈥檚 vastly improved COVID-19 numbers over the next two months, Murphy said.
Masks will still be required on school buses, officials said.
The decision is a reversal for Murphy, coming two months after he said face coverings were likely to remain at least for middle and elementary school students when classes resume.
