Since Chicago Public Schools implemented the University of Chicago’s indicator, the percentage of ninth-graders who’ve stayed on track, or earned the appropriate number of credits to graduate, has increased from 57 to 82 percent.
Among the other data points:
- On-track rates improved for all students, but especially for African-American males whose on-track rate rose to 71 percent in 2013 from 43 percent in 2005.
The number of students earning B’s has increased. - Freshmen who pass all of their classes have a 90 percent chance of graduating from high school, compared to roughly 70 percent of those who have failed a class.
- Seventy percent of ninth-graders who earned mostly A’s went to college; only half of students with mostly C’s moved on.
