A federal judge in Tucson has decided to allow two transgender girls to participate in girls’ sports at their schools while their lawsuit challenging an Arizona law barring them from doing so proceeds.
“In short, transgender girls, who have not experienced male puberty, play like girls,” U.S. District Court Judge Jennifer G. Zipps wrote in her opinion, issued Thursday. “There is no logical connection between prohibiting them from playing on girls’ sports teams and the goals of preventing unfair competition in girls’ sports or protecting girls from being physically injured by boys.”
Zipps’ decision was delivered 10 days after a hearing on the girls’ motion for a preliminary injunction, just as students are beginning to return to school across Arizona.
