How lockdown drills affect America’s children

The question at the heart of this debate is what causes more harm in a student鈥檚 life: the threat of a school shooting occurring or the constant stress from lockdown drills?

School shootings remain a rare occurrence in general, said Jillian Peterson, associate professor of criminology and criminal justice at Hamline University in Saint Paul, Minnesota. She co-wrote an opinion piece for CNN in 2018 titled, 鈥淭he usual approach to school security isn鈥檛 working.鈥

According to FBI data, since 2000, an average of about five students or staff a year have died in active shooter incidents in a school. That鈥檚 five out of 56 million students in the United States.
