Surrency is in his 46th year of education, having been elected three times to serve as superintendent of the Putnam County School District. Under his leadership, the Florida district built several new schools and experienced one of the biggest graduation rates increases in the state. He was named the 2023 State Superintendent of the Year for Florida.
