Agriculture education is helping students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder succeed inside and outside of the classroom, despite the additional challenges these students can face in school compared to their peers.
I think agriculture education courses can be beneficial with students with ADHD, because its hands-on in nature, as well as theres potential for structured routines and movement in ag classes, said Jay Solomonson, assistant professor of agricultural education at Illinois State University and former agriculture teacher at Orion High School.
As of 2022, more than 7 million children ages 3 to 17 had been diagnosed with ADHDan increase of 1 million since 2016, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nearly 78% of these children also experience conditions such as anxiety, depression or developmental delays.
