Many Maryland students are not proficient in reading, according to a new report by Maryland READS.
鈥淩eading is first and foremost a gateway to all of the learning and all other subjects,鈥 said Trish Brennan-Gac, executive director of Maryland Reads. 鈥淭he more we can make them confident and thriving readers, there鈥檚 also going to be other effects of that in a child鈥檚 well-being.鈥
She said the organization鈥檚 new report, titled 鈥淭he State of Reading in Maryland 2025: It鈥檚 Time for a Comeback After a Decade of Decline,鈥 shows that education spending has grown 37%, but that鈥檚 not paying off when it comes to students being able to read.
