These are the best states for pre-K-12 education in 2023

Each year, U.S. News compiles its list of the best states in America based on eight individual categories, including education, a subcategory that informs the overall ranking. 2023’s number one state for pre-K-12 education belongs to one east coastal state known for its beaches, boardwalks and hoagies.

Using survey data from nearly 70,000 people, the rankings serve as a lens into how well states serve their residents according to each category. Regarding pre-K-12, U.S. News considered the following five metrics: college readiness, high school graduation rate, NAEP math scores, NAEP reading scores and preschool enrollment.

Now here’s a look at the top 10 in America for pre-K-12 education:
