Indiana superintendent quits day after arrest for allegedly driving drunk

An Indiana superintendent, James Callane, has resigned after being arrested on suspicion of drunk driving after a crash over the weekend, according to multiple media reports.

Callane, who had been superintendent of the rural Maconaquah School Corporation since 2018, allegedly left the scene after being involved in a single-vehicle crash on Saturday afternoon in Fulton, about 90 miles north of Indianapolis, according to information that local TV station, , obtained from the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office.

Callane was booked into the Fulton County jail and later released on his own recognizance, another station, , reported. Callane had not been formally charged as of Wednesday morning, WRTV.com reported.

Callane resigned his position the following day (Sunday) and will be replaced on an interim basis by the district’s director of student services, Kelly McPike, Maconaquah Schools announced . The school board also thanked Callane for his service to the district.

Just over a week ago, a New Jersey superintendent was arrested and charged with assault after he allegedly punched a woman during a late-night altercation at the Jersey Shore, according to multiple reports.

, 46, the superintendent of Lodi Public Schools outside New York City, was taken into custody around 1:20 am on Sunday (Aug. 28) in the beach town of Seaside Heights when a patrol officer spotted an apparent fight on a sidewalk,. According to the affidavit of probable cause obtained by NJ.com, the officer allegedly first saw Petty punch a woman in the face and then saw Petty on top of another man.
