The Watertown School Board is defending its decision to remove an instrumental piece of music from the high school bands spring concert.

Last week, the board voted 7-1 to pull A Mother of A Revolution! from the May 18 program, saying the piece violated the districts controversial issues policy.

On Sunday, the board continued to defend the decision with a press release stating the board removed the song due to its celebration of violence.

Records show some of those candidates were hand-picked by a national conservative political group that spent more than $160,000 this spring on local public school board races.

Spending by the New York-based 1776 Project PAC is up 240 percent on Wisconsin races this year compared to 2025, according to records from the Wisconsin Ethics Commission.

A group of parents and educators from across Wisconsin filed a lawsuit Monday against the state legislature, alleging lawmakers have failed to adequately fund public schools.

The 19 plaintiffs, led by the Wisconsin PTA, are asking the Circuit Court of Eau Claire County to hold the Legislature accountable for not meeting its constitutionally mandated obligation to provide all children with an equal opportunity for a sound basic education.

The 105-page complaint alleges the decline in student reading and math scores are tied to the decrease in state funding to public schools over the last decade.

Only half of Wisconsin high school students feel like they belong in the classroom. Thats according to a recent report from the Wisconsin Office of Childrens Mental Health.

The study defines belonging as feeling of being welcomed, accepted, respected, and valued within ones social environment, including family, friends, school, and community.

The numbers are even lower among minority students. Less than half of girls, Spanish-speaking students and Black students feel a sense of belonging. Among lesbian, gay and bisexual students, only 39 percent feel accepted at their school. The last decade has seen a 37 percent drop in Wisconsin youth feeling like they belong at their school.

Cheever was an art teacher at three different Milwaukee schools, responsible for all grade levels. But that year, her school had just announced another round of budget cuts.

Right now, Americans are questioning the value of higher education, especially with the rising cost of education and burden of student debt. According to a 2024 survey from the Pew Research Center, only 22 percent of U.S. adults say the cost of a four-year college degree today is worth it, even if someone has to take out loans.

At the same time, jobs in the trades are among Wisconsins hottest jobsjobs with above-average salaries with the highest projected growthaccording to the state Department of Workforce Development. And in recent years, Wisconsin high schools have seen a steady increase in enrollment in hands-on technical education courses, according to Perkins V data. Math scores for U.S. fourth and eighth graders declined significantly last school year, compared to 2019, according to the latest results from the National Center for Education Statistics, or NCES.

The NCES data is not broken down by state, but the trends it points out can be seen in Wisconsin.

Since before the COVID-19 pandemics widespread school shutdowns, the average mathematics score for fourth graders has declined by 18 points. Scores for eighth graders declined by 27 points.

School nurses in Wisconsin say they need more financial support to provide the health services needed by students.

Leaders of the Wisconsin Association of School Nurses met with state legislators last week to talk about unfinished business from this years legislative session, which ended in March.

Lawmakers did not act on a proposal to allow school districts to receive all federal Medicaid funding reimbursed for school-based services, like physical therapy and skilled nursing. Its a change proposed by Gov. Tony Evers in his 2023-25 state budget.
