Oklahoma schools could soon be required to report the number of undocumented students in its district after the Oklahoma State Department of Education quietly published a series of proposed changes to the agency’s administrative rules on its website.

The proposed section would mandate that students provide proof of citizenship upon enrollment. According to the section’s language, reasons include assessing statewide and local educational needs, like language and cultural barriers, needs for English as a Second Language teachers, and tutors and funding needs.

If the proposal passes, school districts would be required to record the number of students enrolled in the district who werent able to provide such documentation due to the lack of citizenship or immigration status of the student.

A Satanist group wants to send its “Ministers of Satan” into Oklahoma public schools should a chaplaincy bill become law in the state.

Senate Bill 36 would authorize public school districts across Oklahoma to welcome faith-based chaplains as hired staff or as volunteers to provide support, services and programs for students. SB36 is advancing through the Oklahoma State Legislature, after being approved last week by the Oklahoma House of Representatives. The bill is similar to a law passed in 2023 in Texas. Before the House voted on the measure, an amendment aimed at preventing chaplains from proselytizing was made, along with an amendment adding educational requirements for them.

The Satanic Temple weighing in on SB36 has been part of the debate over similar chaplaincy bills in other states like Utah and Florida, where elected leaders have balked at the idea of Satanists providing support services for students.

Communication issues between Oklahoma City Public Schools Superintendent Sean McDaniel and members of the district’s board of education, particularly regarding the districts treatment of charter schools, seemed to be a source of friction leading up to his unexpected resignation last month, emails obtained by The Oklahoman indicate.

In his resignation letter, McDaniel stated that he and “a particular member of this Board and I have completely different views regarding individual board members’ roles and responsibilities and mine in serving this District.”

“For months, and in good faith I have tried to bridge that gulf through conversations with the board and with concessions I have been willing to make, but to no avail. I regret that our differing views of who should administer the District on a daily basis are now irreconcilable,” he wrote.
