More than 1,000 Los Angeles school workers are expected to lose their jobs after the Board of Education on Thursday approved layoffs and, separately, after district management quietly terminated the employment of workers without tenure or other union job protections.

The termination of the workers who lack due process job protections, including some teachers, transpired without an announcement but has been confirmed by officials.

The Los Angeles Unified board also got its first look at an updated fiscal stability plan that calls for cuts totaling more than $3.6 billion over the next three years which would result in staff cutbacks on a massive scale, pay cuts for remaining employees and the closing of schools. The estimated job reductions in that scenario would be 6,000 or more, approaching 10% of the districts workforce.

There is a new cost to hiring an international worker to fill a vital but otherwise vacant position in a California classroom: $100,000.

In September, the Trump administration began requiring American employers to pay a $100,000 sponsorship fee for new H-1B visas, on top of already required visa application fees that amount to $9,500 to $18,800, depending on various factors. These visas allow skilled and credentialed workers in multiple job sectors to stay in the U.S.

Most foreign workers on H-1Bs in California work in the tech sector. But California also relies on H-1B visas to address another issue: a nationwide teacher shortage and a high demand for staff in dual-language education and special education in K-12 districts.

A few months ago, a high school English teacher in Los Angeles Unified noticed something different about his students tests. Students who had struggled all semester were suddenly getting As. He suspected some were cheating, but he couldnt figure out how.

Until a student showed him the latest version of Google Lens.

Google had recently made the visual search tool easier to use on the companys Chrome browser. When users click on an icon hidden in the tool bar, a moveable bubble pops up. Wherever the bubble is placed, a sidebar appears with an artificial intelligence answer, description, explanation or interpretation of whatever is inside the bubble. For students, it provides an easy way to cheat on digital tests without typing in a prompt or even leaving the page. All they have to do is click.

Consider the humble lump of pink Play-Doh.

To a parent, its a quick toddler playtime activity. But ask an early childhood educator about Play-Doh, and its a science experiment, an opportunity for sensory exploration, a fine motor skills activity, and an introduction to color mixing, all rolled into one squishy blob.

We could do so much with two jars of Play-Doh and an hour, said Kaitlin Fullerton, who has been a preschool teacher and director for 14 years. An educator of older children would look at that very differently.

Since William Schnider got his first iPhone in sixth grade, its become an extension of his very being. By day its nestled in his right pants pocket; by night its within arms reach. He rarely talks to people on his phone, instead communicating via Instagram groups, TikTok memes and texts. He syncs his calendar to his parents phones.

So when William, a 17-year-old rising senior at Van Nuys High School, learned that cellphones would be banned across L.A. public schools, he instantly scoffed like so many others.

Yet after the initial shock and an absolute no is voiced by many teenage students, more nuanced thoughts emerge: Maybe we are falling into social media and cellphone addiction. Maybe all the distractions and the obsession with likes are bad for us. Maybe we need some relief.

Late campaign turbulence in two competitive races has complicated the picture.

Suicide has been a leading cause of death for young people for at least the last half-century.

But in the early 2000s, those deaths began to surge, according to national data. Experts have struggled to explain why: Theories include Instagram and precocious puberty, easier access to guns, more stringent rules for prescribing antidepressants and increased use of hormonal contraceptives.

What they do know is that the age at which children kill themselves has been falling, while the ratio of girls to boys who die by suicide has climbed. In California, where teen suicide has been rising faster than in most states, the rate among Black and Asian youths is now higher than among white ones, according to California Department of Public Health data.
