What if the most compelling example of future-ready learning this year听didn鈥檛听happen in a classroom鈥攂ut in the night sky?听
That鈥檚听exactly what will take place at the听Future of Education Technology Conference (FETC), where eight high school students from Longmont, Colorado, will produce and听operate听the听first-ever student-created drone show in the conference鈥檚 history. This is not a novelty act. It is a fully听FAA-approved, commercially听viable听drone performance using more than 500 drones鈥攄esigned, coded, choreographed, and flown entirely by students from the Innovation Center of听St. Vrain Valley Schools.听
The thesis is simple and urgent:听Career and Technical Education (CTE) works best when students are trusted with real responsibility, real tools, and real audiences鈥攁nd districts need examples that prove it now.
Why this matters now听
Across the country, district leaders are seeking ways to make learning more relevant while preparing students for jobs that听don鈥檛听yet have clear titles. At the same time, industries tied to aviation, robotics, computer science, media production, and engineering are evolving faster than traditional curriculum cycles.听
This student drone听show听answers听that challenge with action. The team spent more than听60 hours听individually听coding the performance using Python and Blender. Students composed original music,听designed aerial graphics,听planned听logistics, managed safety protocols, captured professional video deliverables, and earned commercial drone pilot licenses鈥攐perating听at a professional standard with real market value.听
As instructor听Joe McBreen听explains,听鈥淲e听didn鈥檛听design this program to simulate industry鈥攚e designed it to听be听industry. Students听aren鈥檛听pretending to be professionals; they are professionals, accountable to clients, regulations, and real-world outcomes.鈥听
From 鈥渆xposure鈥 to execution听
Many CTE programs focus on exposure: introductions to careers, tools, or pathways. This model goes further. Students run the entire production lifecycle鈥攆rom client meetings to final听execution鈥攎irroring how work听actually happens听beyond school walls.听
That distinction matters. Students develop technical fluency in coding and flight systems, creative skills in design and music production, and durable skills like collaboration, project management, and problem-solving. The result is a program that collapses the distance between school and workforce readiness.听
For district leaders looking for a concrete example, the Innovation Center鈥檚 Drone Performance Team offers a clear blueprint. Their work鈥攁nd resources鈥攁re publicly accessible through the St. Vrain Innovation Center鈥檚 .
Addressing the obvious concerns听
Is this scalable? Is it safe? Is it听equitable?听
St. Vrain鈥檚 approach answers all three. Safety and compliance are embedded through licensing and approval processes. Scalability comes from modular design鈥攄istricts can start small and grow capacity over time. Equity is addressed by embedding the program within a public school system, expanding access to advanced learning experiences that are too often limited to select programs or private opportunities.听
What district leaders can do next听
This story听isn鈥檛听about drones alone.听It鈥檚听about听designing CTE programs that听operate听at听professional standards. District administrators can take several practical steps:
- Partner with industry to define what 鈥渞eal work鈥 looks like and align programs accordingly.听
- Prioritize credentials that carry immediate workforce value.听
- Create public showcases that give students authentic audiences and accountability.听
- Invest in educators willing to serve as project听leads听and mentors, not just content deliverers.听
As听Jennifer Womble, Conference Chair of FETC, puts it:
鈥淭his drone show is more than a performance鈥攊t鈥檚听proof that when we trust students with meaningful work, they rise to the occasion. This is CTE as a launchpad, not a track.鈥听
An invitation to look up听
District leaders attending FETC are invited to听experience this historic student-produced drone show in person at 6 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 12,听immediately听following the听Expo Hall Reception. After sunset, look听to听the night sky over听International Drive鈥攂est viewed from the听West Concourse exit.听
