SPS superintendent to withdraw school closure plan amid community division

The superintendent of the state’s largest school district is expected to drop a controversial plan to close schools in Fall 2025.

Dr. Brent Jones made the announcement in a letter to Seattle Public Schools families Monday evening, saying the $5.5 million money-saving proposal was dividing the community.

He said he planned to withdraw his recommendation to close four elementary campuses next fall. Instead, the district will work to address its approximately $94 million budget crisis through support from the state and a possible levy renewal.
