The district must then apply for the grants again in 2019 and 2020. This will be added to the $42.2 million levy passed last spring by voters in the school district.
The West Virginia School Building Authority on Monday granted the first $9 million in state funding needed to begin countywide building upgrades in Ohio County Schools.
The funding means improvements at Triadelphia and Bridge Street Middle Schools could begin as soon as this summer, according to Superintendent Kim Miller.
Voters in the school district passed a $42.2 million levy last spring for property improvements, with expectations the school district also would receive an additional $27 million from the SBA for projects over the next three years.
