State leaders unrolled a new education plan Monday with goals of improving equity, career pathways, support for student mental health and teacher retention. Members of Gov. Tim Walz’s administration are already in the process of hiring a director for a new Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Center at the Minnesota Department of Education to address systemic racism.

The education plan is called “Due North.”

“We’re still in the deepest darkest part of the COVID pandemic, but it doesn’t stop us from imagining what comes afterward,” Walz said. “Those things that were exposed by COVID, those things that were exposed by the death of George Floyd, those things that have been exposed since Jan. 6 in the attack on the Capitol, this is now our time. We get to write this next story together.”
