The students in a pilot AP African American Studies course at Atlanta鈥檚 Maynard Jackson High School told me they learned more about the contribution of their ancestors and their heritage in that single class than in their entire prior decade in school.
鈥淚 have learned so much about our culture in this course and I feel they should be sharing our culture with everyone else,鈥 said Da鈥橫erra Handley, a student in the pilot class in the spring of 2023. 鈥淓veryone should be learning about it.鈥
That is unlikely now after Georgia鈥檚 school superintendent declined to adopt the course for the state鈥檚 public schools. That means no state funding will be provided to underwrite the cost of the class, which led Gwinnett County Public Schools to notify students Monday that AP African American Studies will not be offered and they will have to adjust their schedules.
