Construction Watch: Partnership helps Washington high school dropouts learn construction skills

Nonprofit Opportunities Industrialization Center of Washington and West Valley School District have partnered to offer a new program for 16- to 24-year-olds in Yakima County who have not earned a GED diploma or attended postsecondary school. Enrollment in the program will give young people the potential to earn a high school diploma while doing hands-on construction projects and getting paid. Read more.

In other construction news:

Baltimore County is now expecting developers to help pay for new schools, roads and other improvements. That will happen starting next year, thanks to a recently imposed impact fee. The county expects to bring in about $10 million per year, which could help the school system deal with its building crisis. Read more.

Several school administrators in Illinois are advocating for the reestablishment of a grant that would help fund school construction projects. For some, this is a chance to get money that was promised in fiscal year 2004 before the grant was discontinued.Read more.
