Alabama may ban a controversial practice from elementary school classrooms

An Alabama law would ban elementary teachers from using an outdated method of reading instruction.SB168 would prohibit teachers from using three-cuing. The model asks students to look at a word and guess its meaning from context, as opposed to sounding out the word and building fluency.

There are a lot of people that are still teaching basically children to guess words, instead of sounding them out, said Terri Collins, a supporter of the legislation. We would like to ban that, and hopefully that would help ban it in our colleges of education that maybe be still teaching that a little bit and then letting it get in the classroom.

The bill has passed the Senate and will be considered by the House.
