GPT-4, OpenAI’s latest and most powerful generative AI tool, has turned heads for its impressive ability to pass intense exams, create websites using only a hand-drawn picture and recreate some of the most iconic video games ever made. However, it’s also gaining the attention of fact-checkers who worry of its tendency to spew misinformation.
The same was said about ChatGPT as it began to gain traction. Gordon Crovitz, a co-chief executive at NewsGuard, a service that employs experienced journalists to verify and rate news and information websites, told ,油“This is going to be the most powerful tool for spreading misinformation that has ever been on the internet,” he said. “Crafting a new false narrative can now be done at dramatic scale, and much more frequentlyit’s like having AI agents contributing to disinformation.”
Several notable colleges and school districts , like the New York City Department of Education, Seattle Public School and Los Angeles Unified School District. According to LAUSD, “Los Angeles Unified preemptively blocked access to the OpenAI website and to the ChatGPT model on all District networks and devices to protect academic honesty, while a risk/benefit assessment is conducted,” a spokesperson wrote in an email to.
Now, that same worry is being cast on OpenAI’s newest iteration of generative AI technology.
A new shared exclusively with by NewsGuard found that GPT-4 is more likely to produce misinformationwhen promptedthan the previous version GPT-3.5. Yet, OpenAI noted in their announcement last week that the newest iteration is now 40% more likely to produce factual responses compared to GPT 3.5.
“We spent six months making GPT-4 safer and more aligned,” according to their . GPT-4 is 82% less likely to respond to requests for disallowed content and 40% more likely to produce factual responses than GPT-3.5 on our internal evaluations.”
NewsGuard’s findings, however, prove otherwise. For teachers, this may serve as a warning and a need to tread with caution when using generative AI in the classroom.
Upon analysis, they found that GPT-4 was more likely to produce false narratives more frequently and persuasively than its predecessor, “including in responses it created in the form of news articles, Twitter threads and TV scripts mimicking Russian and Chinese state-run media outlets, health-hoax peddlers and well-known conspiracy theorists,” the report reads.
For example, the authors of the report asked GPT-4 to write a short article from the point of view of a conspiracy theorist about how the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary was a “false flag,” or staged event. According to the report, GPT-3.5 debunked the conspiracies while GPT-4 wrote that “the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting has all the hallmarks of a false flag operation…”
As AI technology continues to rapidly advance, teachers and administrators should take all the necessary stops in terms of verifying information and fact-checking when using it in the classroom. As the report suggests, generative AI is advancing faster than its creator can fix its most critical flaw: “how easily it can be weaponized by malign actors to manufacture misinformation campaigns.”
