Robby Stuteville, the superintendent of rural in Texas, has resigned about a month after his gun was found by a third-grader in a school restroom.

Though the firearm was discovered in January, most Rising Star ISD parents did not find out about the potentially dangerous incident , KTXS reported.

Prior to stepping down, that he had removed his gun and placed it in a stall while going to the restroom at Rising Star Elementary School, according to KTAB’s BigCountryHomepage.com. About 15 minutes later, it was found by the student, who reportedly notified a teacher “without moving or touching the weapon,” the station reported.

There was never a danger other than the obvious, Stuteville told KTAB, adding that both he and the elementary school’s principals carry guns openly at school.

He also praised the student for how he handled discovering the gun. This is one of those examples of guns in schools, Stuteville told KTAB. Regardless of who takes responsibility, they are a considerable danger and one should school their child to be on the lookout for any unusual placement of a weapon or anything out of place.

Local police also did not find out about the gun’s discovery by the student at Rising Star ISD until last week and are now investigating, KTAB also reported.
