The U.S. Department of Education is launching an investigation in Virginias largest school division over allegations a school social worker scheduled an abortion appointment for a student and didnt tell the students parents.

In a news release, the agency said it has initiated enforcement action against Fairfax County Public Schools and is seeking additional information by mid-October. If the school system doesnt provide it, they could risk losing federal funding, the agency said.

The step comes weeks after reports that a Centreville High School social worker allegedly scheduled an abortion for a student during the 2021-22 school year, paid the clinic fee and didnt tell the students parents. The release said the social worker reportedly pressured a second student into having an abortion.

The implementation comes three years after an incident involving a Glasgow Middle School counselor resulted in calls for stronger safety measures, including the use of the Rap Back program. The school system learned Darren Thornton was able to remain on the job for over a year, despite an arrest and conviction for a sex offense.

When D.C.-area school systems welcome students for the fall semester, teachers will be expected to offer alternative reading options if parents have religious objections to books chosen for a particular unit.

The June ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court that Montgomery County, Maryland, public school parents who have religious objections should have been able to pull their children out of the classroom when school lessons used five LGBTQ+ storybooks raises the question: How will the decision affect local school systems in the coming year?

The Supreme Court ruling will only affect books required for classroom lessons, although local school systems say they will ensure that school libraries will contain age-appropriate offerings.

Standing in the front of his Lorton, Virginia, classroom in October, Sean Miller told his students that food would be a topic of conversation during the class period.

He also said they would talk about the types of goods that emerged in ancient East and West Africa. Part of that would involve how the influence of gold shaped the development of certain African empires.

But first, Miller advised the class to pay attention to the video he was about to play. As part of a conversation about the cultural implications of food, he asked the class the types of food theyd expect to see at a Black family reunion.
