Across the country, schools are increasingly embracing policies to either ban cell phones or limit their use in the classroom. The new rules aim to reduce distractions and foster the development of students social and emotional skills, ultimately creating a more focused and supportive learning environment.

At the close of this years legislative session, Delaware lawmakers approved a $168 million supplemental spending bill that included money for a plethora of one-time expenses. The measure includes $250,000 for the Department of Education to implement a cell phone pilot program focused on the use of phone pouches.

Bill sponsor state Sen. Trey Paradee, D-Dover, says restricting cell phone use is something that even music artists are implementing to help reduce distractions for concertgoers. He said students could similarly benefit.

More than 200 community members, majority of them educators, packed into the Great Valley High School auditorium Monday night to process and seek solutions in the aftermath of The New York Times story about a group of middle schoolers who targeted their teachers on TikTok.

The teachers union turned up in solidarity with affected teachers, following through on a promise. They arrived wearing blue, the districts school colors.

Right now, we have a unique opportunity and more importantly a responsibility to show that schools are welcoming to all, said Nikki Salvatico, president of the Great Valley Education Association.

Chris Tomlinson said he and his wife were surprised and troubled to learn the drinking water at their daughters high school contained toxic PFAS chemicals.

In March, the Central Bucks School District emailed parents and staff at Central Bucks East High School to inform them the rural Doylestown schools on-site well water was contaminated with the chemicals, and that they had a plan to remove them.

Tomlinson said the schools response did not ease his concern for his daughter, who has regularly drank from the water fountains for the past two years.

Pediatrician Priscilla Mpasi was working at the Kuumba Academy Charter Schools wellness center when a fifth grader came to the clinic again to complain of an earache.

The young girls ear had started hurting again that day after she heard a loud bang in the cafeteria. Her primary care provider had previously prescribed her antibiotics for the earaches, which had been persisting for months.

During a typical doctors office visit, a provider constantly moves from room to room, treating patients. But in the school clinic, the doctor was able to take time with the student and trace back to when her pain first started.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. advocated for education and believed it was the great equalizer. King preached that education could eliminate discrimination and create a more equitable society. And as celebrations kick off across the country in honor of the civil rights leader, many remember the impact his legacy carries today. School District of Philadelphia Superintendent Dr. Tony Watlington says Dr. Kings message is needed now more than ever.

He wanted our students in public schools to get a good education, said Watlington.
