Mayor Michelle Wu announced Monday that the Boston Public Schools showed an uptick in its high school graduation rate, bringing the school system to a new record high of 81.3%, according to state data.

I say every day around the city that our top priority is making Boston a home for everyone and that has everything to do with our young people, our schools, school communities and opportunities for families in Boston, the mayor said during a press conference at Roxburys Dearborn STEM Academy. That is the story behind these numbers.

The figure represents both a 1.6% increase from Bostons 2024 graduation rate of 79.7%, and a slight increase from the previous BPS graduation record of 81%.

Massachusetts school districts from Boston to Pittsfield are facing budget deficits and weighing educator layoffs, citing millions in spending shortfalls.

Boston officials said 70% of the city’s schools could see staff reductions. The Braintree School Committee supported a plan that would eliminate 33 positions, Andover let go of 34 educators earlier this year and Brookline and Pittsfield are considering hundreds of teacher cuts.

Roughly 100 staff members, including myself, were notified that they will not have a job, but they must wait until May 15 to receive [formal] notice, English teacher Samantha Sarantakis told the Braintree School Committee recently. It is no longer a matter of if you lose talented and dedicated staff, but when.

Guests crowded into Temple Emanuel in Newton recently for a discussion titled “Israel, Antisemitism and the Crisis in Education.” What they got instead was a blistering attack on diversity, equity and inclusion programs used by schools to address racism.

Speakers from CAMERA, a pro-Israel group that organized the meeting, said policies that promote diversity, equity and inclusion have been contaminated by antisemitism,” according to a person in attendance.

During the two-hour gathering, speakers argued that DEI initiatives distilled complex issues down to the oppressors vs. the oppressed. They say white Jews have been labeled oppressors, bypassing the historical and modern oppression they experience and that framing fuels hatred of Jewish people, especially as it relates to the crisis in Gaza and Israel. The speakers condemned teachers union support for a ceasefire in Gaza and student-organized walkouts in support of humanitarian aid to Palestine.

Inside her cramped office at the Henderson Inclusion School in Boston, Caitlin Serna scrambles to help her students get into college, and even more importantly, find ways to pay for it.

But this year the federal governments new and “improved” Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, isn’t helping. The crucial form rolled out three months late and riddled with confusing mistakes.

Students need to submit the form to qualify for financial aid, and some colleges require it as early as mid-January.

Black and Latino students especially were more likely to be placed in such classrooms and be kept there for longer, even if the curriculum did not serve them.

Boston Public Schools officials are out with a new five-year inclusive education plan to address long-running disparities in student performance.

It’s part of an agreement BPS made in 2022 to avoid a state takeover, and a reaction to years of underserving Black and brown students in special education and multilingual learning.
