As schools nationwide remain on high alert for AI-assisted cheating, we should all remember one thing, says researcher Elliott Hedman: Deep down, most students love to learn.

The problem, he argues, is that schools feedback system is broken. Grading things like writing assignments is such a time-consuming, arduous task for teachersespecially those who want to offer constructive criticismthat students often dont get the attention they need.

It needs to be instantaneous, Hedman said. You need to have that feedback now, not three weeks later.

Hector Torres wishes he had not waited so long to start college. Thats not the weighty middle-aged regret of lost dreams. Its the lament of an Indianapolis high school senior who waited until late into his sophomore yearGasp!to take advantage of the college classes Indiana offers high schoolers for free or little cost.

Indiana is one of the few states where starting college as a high school sophomore makes you a late bloomer. The state ranks just behind Idaho in leading an early college credit movement, as states increasingly encourage high school students to take college classes, most often at community colleges.

In Idaho and Indiana, high school students make up more than half the students in community college classes, according to a report issued this summer by the Community College Research Center at Columbia University. Iowa and Montana follow, with high schoolers representing more than 40% of community college enrollment, and eight other states comprising more than 30% of enrollment.

Everything seemed to be going well. Thanks to a new state funding formula passed in 2017, followed by a one-time infusion of aid from the federal government in the wake of COVID-19, Chicago has been able to add teachers and other staff while raising salaries.

At the end of the last school year, with the teacher contract expiring, the union released an extensive list of demands, asking for even more staffing and a minimum of 9% annual raises for the next four years.

But over the last few months, the budget reality has started to hit home. The district is considering taking out a high-interest $284 million loan to cover this years operating budget. And next year, the city will face a shortfall of $982 million.

A Massachusetts family is awaiting a judges ruling in a federal lawsuit that could determine their sons future. To a few observers, it could also push educators to limit the use of generative artificial intelligence in school. To others, its simply a case of helicopter parents gone wild.

The case, filed last month, tackles key questions of academic integrity, the college admissions arms race and even the purpose of school in an age when students can outsource onerous tasks like thinking to a chatbot.

While its immediate outcome will largely serve just one familythe students parents want a grade changed so their son can apply early-admission to elite collegesthe case could ultimately prompt school districts nationwide to develop explicit policies on AI.

Thirteen years ago this month, Congress passed the Affordable Care Act (ACA), otherwise known as Obamacare.

In theory, the ACA shouldnt have affected public school districts all that much. Most already offered health care plans that met the ACAs requirements to at least cover 10 , and a Cadillac Tax on high-cost plans that had been included in the original bill was delayed and then eventually.
