Choosing a college can be nerve-racking, especially when there are multiple offers on the table.

So whats worth prioritizing? Location? Affordability? Curriculum?

Ahead of May 1, the decision deadline for many colleges, The Washington Post asked more than a dozen counselors, researchers and policy analysts about the most important considerations when choosing a college. The four factors the experts most commonly mentioned were: affordability, academic fit, social fit and graduation rate.

Police responded to the Florida middle school minutes after the alert arrived last week: Security cameras had detected a man in the building, dressed in camouflage with a suspected weapon pointed down the hallway, being held in the position of a shouldered rifle.

The Oviedo school went into lockdown. An officer searched classrooms but couldnt find the person or hear any commotion, according to a police report.

Then dispatchers added another detail. Upon closer review of the image flagged to police, they told the officer, the suspected rifle might have been a band instrument.

For the first time in as long as anyone can remember, Arizonas largest public school district isnt opening its schools to voters as polling sites.

The reasons have been building for years, but the final straw for Mesa Public Schools officials came last November with a small, low-turnout election that became mired in misinformation and menace.

It was very chaotic, Assistant Superintendent Scott Thompson recalled. It was overwhelming.

A Tennessee school district where federal investigators said students subjected a Black classmate to repeated harassment, including calling him racist slurs, hitting him and holding a mock slave auction to sell him to White peers, will implement several changes under a settlement agreement announced Monday.

A 2023 Justice Department investigation found that administrators at Hawkins County School District in northeast Tennessee let a racially hostile climate take root in two schools by being slow to investigate reports of harassment and, in some instances, not disciplining perpetrators and discouraging students from reporting further abuse. Students passed around a drawing of a Ku Klux Klansmen, made whipping noises at a Black student and added him to a group chat filled with racist slurs, the department alleges.

Hawkins County School District, which denies the allegations, agreed to overhaul its anti-harassment procedures by hiring a compliance officer, creating an electronic portal to track complaints and reviewing anti-harassment efforts.

Billions in taxpayer dollars are being used to pay tuition at religious schools throughout the country, as state voucher programs expand dramatically and the line separating public education and religion fades.

School vouchers can be used at almost any private school, but the vast majority of the money is being directed to religious schools, according to a Washington Post examination of the nations largest voucher programs.

Vouchers, government money that covers education costs for families outside the public schools, vary by state but offer up to $16,000 per student per year, and in many cases fully cover the cost of tuition at private schools. In some schools, a large share of the student body is benefiting from a voucher, meaning a significant portion of the schools funding is coming directly from the government.

Where classrooms are becoming too hot for learning /article/where-classrooms-are-becoming-too-hot-for-learning/ Fri, 24 May 2024 12:15:33 +0000 /?p=163091 As heat waves creep north, they are baking schools that previously did not need air conditioning. Fixing the problem will be neither cheap, nor easy.

Americas aging school buildings are on a collision course with a rapidly warming climate.

Last fall, school officials were forced to send students home across the Northeast and the Mid-Atlantic just as many were returning from summer break because of extreme heat and schools lacking air conditioning. In Baltimore and Detroit, high heat led to early dismissals, the same as it had four months earlier when summer temperatures struck in May.

In Philadelphia last year, administrators moved the first day of school from late August to after Labor Day, in part to avoid a repeat of heat-related school closures in previous years. But the weather didnt cooperate. They ended up closing more than 70 schools three hours earlier than usual for the entire week.

When Raymond Dolphin became assistant principal of a middle school in Connecticut two years ago, it was clear to him that the kids were not all right.

The problem was cellphones. Students were using the devices in class, despite a rule against it. Social media was exacerbating nearly every conflict among students. When Dolphin walked the hallways or surveyed the cafeteria, he invariably saw heads bent over screens.

So in December, Dolphin did something unusual: He banned them.

Former Montgomery County Public Schools superintendent Monifa B. McKnight will receive $1.3 million as part of her separation agreement with the county board of education, according to a document released Friday.

Most of the payout covers agreed upon wages, though it also includes $30,000 to cover her attorney fees, according to the agreement, which was obtained by The Washington Post through a public records request. McKnights attorney, Jason Downs, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

All decisions the Board makes are made in the best interest of our students and our school system, the board of education said in a statement provided by President Karla Silvestre. It is imperative that anything that distracts from high quality teaching and learning is minimized.

School hate crimes targeting LGBTQ+ people have sharply risen in recent years, climbing fastest in states that have passed laws restricting LGBTQ student rights and education, a Washington Post analysis of FBI data finds.

In states with restrictive laws, the number of hate crimes on K-12 campuses has more than quadrupled since the onset of a divisive culture war that has often centered on the rights of LGBTQ+ youth.

At the same time, calls to LGBTQ+ youth crisis hotlines have exploded, with some advocates drawing a connection between the spike in bullying and hate crimes, and the political climate.

When Kim Rider and her team contact a former student, they arent just checking intheyre also gathering data.

Rider oversees career and technical education in Allen Parish, a region of rural Louisiana known for pine forests and the states largest casino. The 4,000-student school district offers classes in agriculture and health sciences, courses in coding and welding, and internships at the hospital and the district offices.

Yet Rider cant be sure that her program steers students toward successful careers. Thats because Louisiana, like many states, lacks a system for tracking students once they enter the workforce. To follow students career paths, Rider and her colleagues must ask the graduates themselves for updates.
