A law from 2020 allowed school boards in Ohio to provide a moment of silence for prayer, reflection or meditation for a moral, patriotic or philosophical reasons. A newly introduced bill would require all public schools do this every day class is in session.

The Columbus City Schools Superintendent’s Community Facilities Task Force has recommended to the school board nine schools that it believes should be closed, as well as four other schools recommended for grade realignment.

The board voted unanimously Tuesday to accept the recommendations from the task force, but plans to take more time to get additional feedback from the community before voting to close any schools.

In a presentation during a Columbus City school board meeting Tuesday, the task force recommended that the board consider closing six elementary schools, two middle schools and a high school building. Last month, the task force presented options where up to 20 possible school buildings in the state’s largest district could be closed under nine different recommended scenarios.

As education policy becomes more political, Ohio Republicans are debating a bill to make school board candidates declare their party affiliations.

Partisan elections for school board members will allow voters to get a better idea of what the candidates platforms are, Rep. Mike Loychik, R-Bazetta, said in a statement. It is important that we give voters information that will allow them to make an informed decision, especially when theyre voting for those who decide our childrens educational opportunities.

That’s why he introduced House Bill 267. If passed, the legislation would require school board candidates to run in partisan primaries and then with an R or a D beside their names on the ballot in general elections.
