Qualman calculates it like this: Students enrolled in districts that run on four-day school weeks are in school under 160 days per year, with some down to 150 days, compared with the 180 days many of their peers across the country attend school. Those students are in school 30 fewer days, which adds up to six weeks in a single school year. Over the span of a student鈥檚 time in grades K-12, that shaves about two years off the total time they spend in school.

School officials from the 2-month-old Riverstone Academy say their students are owed state funding under protections in the U.S. Constitution while state education officials argue that allocating dollars to a school with religious teachings would violate both the state and U.S. Constitution.

Riverstone Academy, where more than 30 children attend kindergarten through fifth grade, is authorized by Education ReEnvisioned BOCES, or Board of Cooperative Educational Service, and operated by Pueblo nonprofit Forging Education, which runs a network of religious private schools and home-school enrichment programs.

The most recent dip 鈥� a 0.2% decline 鈥� is not as dramatic as the hit enrollment took during the last school year, when the state reported a drop of 3,253 students, a 0.37% decrease from the year before. But it accelerates a trend of dwindling school populations that emerged across much of the state and country during the pandemic and is poised to reshape how schools operate.

Enrollment in preschool through 12th grade totaled 881,464 students during the state鈥檚 annual count in October, with the biggest enrollment drops among its youngest students. The number of kids in preschool, kindergarten and first grade fell by 3,691 kids from 2022 after those same grades experienced a similar decrease the previous school year, state data shows.
