A new incident occurred in Austin, Texas, on Jan. 12 while a school bus was loading passengers and is under investigation, NTSB said, adding it is also aware of a Jan. 14 incident that involved a Waymo and a 2023 international school bus operating on a special-needs route.

The NTSB said the Waymo stopped for the bus but then other vehicles passed the bus, which prompted the Waymo to ask a human remote assistance operator if it was “a school bus with active signals?” and the agent said no, and then Waymo passed the bus.

The NTSB plans to issue safety recommendations to prevent similar incidents.

Florida plans to end all state vaccine mandates, including for students to attend schools, the state’s surgeon general, Joseph Ladapo, announced on Wednesday, a move public health experts warned could trigger severe outbreaks among children, tourists and those with compromised immune systems. Ladapo, along with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, cast the issue of vaccination as one of personal choice.

“Every last one of the them is wrong and drips with disdain and slavery,” Ladapo said at a press conference in Tampa. “Who am I as a government or anyone else, or who am I as a man standing here now to tell you what to do with your body?” Ladapo said his agency would roll back mandates for a half-dozen or so vaccines under its authority but will need to work with the Republican-dominated Florida Legislature on a broader package of reforms. He did not specify which vaccine mandates his agency would do away with.

“Medical freedom is something we’ve got to be very conscientious about protecting,” DeSantis said.

As the school year comes to an end across the United States, many teachers are wondering what they will return to in the fall.

While most of the attention on education in the nation has centered on President Donald Trumps battles with universities, the administration has also vowed to close the Department of Education and issued broad orders targeting diversity and instruction of structural racism and gender in schools, raising concerns about what teachers can and cannot say and teach.

Ive noticed this past year, teachers have been a lot more nervous whenever theyre teaching,” said Ryan Matrigali, 17, a Florida high-schooler. He recently spoke up at a school board meeting in support of former AP English teacher Melissa Calhoun, who was let go after using a students preferred pronouns, according to documents obtained by Reuters through a Freedom of Information Act request.

A federal judge has rejected a bid by the parents of a Massachusetts high school senior to force his school to expunge his disciplinary record and raise his history class grade after officials accused him of using an artificial intelligence program to cheat on a class assignment.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul Levenson in Boston on Wednesday ruled, opens new tab that officials at Hingham High School reasonably concluded that the use of the AI tool by Jennifer and Dale Harris’ son to complete a class project violated academic integrity rules.

The judge as a result declined to issue an order at a preliminary stage in the litigation that would force the school to expunge their son’s disciplinary record and raise his AP U.S. History grade from a C-plus to a B.

Trump likely to expand ‘school choice,’ a longstanding conservative goal /article/trump-likely-to-expand-school-choice-a-longstanding-conservative-goal/ Thu, 21 Nov 2024 14:31:31 +0000 /?p=168733 Experts say Trump stands a good chance of winning a tax break for programs that help pay for private tuition. That approach would not steer federal dollars directly to private schools but would still amount to a significant development in a decades-long fight over education.

President-elect Donald Trump is poised to enact a dramatic expansion of “school choice” programs next year that would make it easier for hundreds of thousands of parents to send their children to private school.

Though Trump will likely not be able to abolish the U.S. Department of Education as he has promised, experts say he stands a good chance of winning a tax break for programs that help pay for private tuition. That approach would not steer federal dollars directly to private schools but would still amount to a significant development in a decades-long fight over education.

“The consequence would be the biggest school choice victory ever in Washington,” said Frederick Hess, an education expert at the right-leaning American Enterprise Institute.
