In-class screen time is the next frontier in the school technology debate

What do all of these states and school districts have in common?

They’re all taking steps to restrict the use of technology and screens in their classrooms, after years of schools increasing their use of laptops.

Last month, the Bend–La Pine school board passed a resolution directing the school district to reframe its relationship to technology in the classroom.

Oregon schools have some of the shortest school years in the country. And when budgets are cut in the middle of a year, sometimes school boards make those school years even shorter.

Under an executive order issued Thursday, Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek wants to stop that.

“We simply cannot backslide on the instructional hours we have,” Kotek said at a press conference announcing the order Thursday morning.

Eugene school students to automatically receive public library cards in community literacy drive

Thousands of public school students in Eugene are getting library cards delivered straight to their schools. Unless their adults opt out, all Eugene School District 4J students will get a library card delivered to their school, ready to use — no trip to the library necessary.

Besides a five-item limit on physical items, the student cards are the same as a regular card. Students who already have a card are welcome to keep both.

Oregon, Washington schools face continued repairs, damages in the wake of latest storms

Most students across Oregon and Southwest Washington are returning to school after snow and ice storms on families, neighborhoods and districts all last week.

However, the extent of the damage varies from region to region or even within individual school districts. In a few areas, getting back to normal may take weeks as work crews rush to meet the high demand.

Oregon school districts seek to use federal guidance to expand free meal access

When students return to Lava Ridge Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, next week after winter break, everyone will be able to get free breakfast and lunch, regardless of whether their families have applied.

That’s because Bend-La Pine schools are taking advantage of new federal guidance that increases the eligibility of schools to offer free meals to students. Starting on Jan. 2, 12 new Bend-La Pine schools, including Lava Ridge, will be able to offer free breakfast and lunch for students. That means 22 of the district’s 33 schools will now offer free meals, up from 10 schools before the break.

College-bound Portland students worry about catching up after lost class time

North Portland’s Jefferson High School campus was quiet on a recent weekday afternoon. No chatter from students or teachers. No parents dropping off or picking up their kids from school. But just across North Killingsworth St., at Portland Community College’s Cascade campus, some Jefferson students were still going to and from class. Sixteen-year-old junior Roman Radecki was one of them.

“It’s been ‘no school November,’” Radecki, who was just getting out of a two-hour PCC Comms 100 class, said. “That’s what people always call November because there’s a lot of days off. But now we literally haven’t been in school.”

Portland teachers on the picket lines buoyed by new negotiations

Hundreds of Portland teachers rallied along Northwest 23rd Avenue and Burnside Street Wednesday morning.

They carried placards saying “On strike for safe schools” and “Teaching Should Not be a Debt Sentence.”

Lincoln High teacher Erik Velasquez was one of many educators who seemed heartened that the union has made some concessions in bargaining this week.

Portland teachers strike continues; school canceled again Monday

Negotiations between Portland Public Schools and Portland Association of Teachers continued Saturday and Sunday, but the two sides had not reached an agreement by Sunday evening. With teachers not planning to show up to school Monday, the district is set to cancel classes for a third day, after cancellations on Nov. 1-2.

“Given where we are in the negotiations, and PAT’s confirmation that they intend to remain in a work stoppage, there will be no school tomorrow,” PPS wrote in a letter addressed to families on Sunday evening.
