The banners stretch along the top of Warner Public Schools鈥 Event Center wall, each with the letter A as the centerpiece.

Every banner celebrates the 16 overall A grades that schools in the rural eastern Oklahoma district have received since 2013 on state report cards. A fresh one printed in 2025 signifies Warner鈥檚 high school and K-8 school were again among the top 5% highest-performing public schools in the state.

The A grades, though a heavy focus in the 800-student district, aren鈥檛 the point, Warner Superintendent David Vinson said. They鈥檙e a byproduct of students鈥 and teachers鈥 hard work. And if Warner can do it, he said, any district can.

Oklahoma鈥檚 new education chief said Wednesday he has 鈥渘o plans to distribute Bibles鈥 or a biblical curriculum in public schools, reversing course from his predecessor, Ryan Walters.

State Superintendent Lindel Fields, who was appointed to the position this month, indicated Wednesday he will not fight in court to defend Walters鈥 order that Oklahoma public schools teach from the Bible and keep a copy of it in every classroom.

A lawsuit, which 32 Oklahomans filed with the state Supreme Court last year, challenged the mandate and Walters鈥 attempt to purchase 55,000 Bibles and a biblical curriculum through a public bidding process.

A new Oklahoma rule places strict limitations on how much time public school counselors can spend on non-counseling tasks, but some have raised concerns of whether the regulation is too vague to have its desired effect.

The rule requires school counselors to spend at least 80% of their work time on direct and indirect counseling services that have 鈥渁n impact on student growth in the areas of academic advisement, college and career, and life skills and wellness,鈥 according to its text. The remainder of their time could be spent on 鈥減rogram planning and school support.鈥

The Oklahoma State Board of Education and the state Legislature approved the rule this year. State Superintendent Ryan Walters, who proposed the rule, said the goal is to ensure school counselors aren鈥檛 saddled with administrative duties that distract from their primary responsibility of counseling students.

An Oklahoma County lawsuit challenging a Catholic charter school has been dropped following the school鈥檚 failed appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Court鈥檚 4-4 stalemate upheld an Oklahoma Supreme Court decision against permitting the country鈥檚 first religious charter school to begin operating in the state with taxpayer funds.

While Catholic leaders, a small state agency and Attorney General Gentner Drummond debated their case before the nation鈥檚 highest court, a separate lawsuit opposing the religious school was pending in Oklahoma County District Court. The coalition of local parents, faith leaders and public education advocates who filed the Oklahoma County case announced Monday they have voluntarily dismissed their lawsuit in light of the higher court decisions.

ll public schools in Oklahoma must pay for free cafeteria meals for every student and exclude certain dyes and processed foods, the state鈥檚 top education official ordered.

State Superintendent Ryan Walters issued a mandate that all districts adjust their budgets to include no-cost breakfasts and lunches in all public schools. Walters said districts already have enough state and federal funds to afford the expense, especially if they cut back on administrators鈥 salaries.

He threatened to audit, withhold state funding or penalize the accreditation of districts that don鈥檛 comply, raising questions over whether he has exceeded the bounds of his authority.

Frustrated with religious content and polarizing language added to Oklahoma academic standards, some parents say they plan to opt their children out of 鈥渋deologically charged鈥 social studies lessons in public schools.

Families and liberal advocates across the state, relying on parental rights laws that Republicans championed, are drafting letters to exempt their children from new social studies content that conservative leaders enacted this year.

An Oklahoma lawsuit coming before the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday could produce a landmark ruling on the role of religion in state-funded education.

At the center of the debate is St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School, a church-backed online charter school that was approved to open in Oklahoma until the state Supreme Court struck it down in June. It would be the first publicly funded charter school in the nation to adopt a religion.

The case questions whether charter schools, long considered public, are truly an arm of the government and whether states should be able to deny a school access to taxpayer funding because it is religious.

More than a dozen states in the past two years have launched or expanded programs that allow families to use taxpayer dollars to send their students to private schools. Now, President Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress want to supercharge those efforts.

Trump in January issued an executive order directing several federal agencies to allow states, tribes and military families to tap into federal money for so-called school choice opportunities. Those can come in the form of education savings accounts, voucher programs, tax credits or scholarships. Trump鈥檚 order also aims to expand access to public charter schools, which are free from some of the rules that apply to traditional public schools.

Meanwhile in Congress, 24 Republican senators have signed on to legislation that would provide $10 billion in annual tax credits to individuals and corporations who make charitable contributions to organizations that provide private-school scholarships. A Nebraska Republican introduced a companion measure in the House.
