]]> In a world with technology for every purpose, plenty of adults find it refreshing to see some students choosing to study basic life skills, which in turn relate to survival, business, leadership and enhanced communication.

Most, if not all, high schools in St. Tammany Parish offer classes in agricultural science, or ag, as well as nutrition and food, which is an updated, upgraded version of what used to be called “home economics.”

During a recent visit to Covington High School, both classes were in session.

]]> After her aunt died last year, 9th grader Darnesha Toldert struggled to get out of bed in the morning, leading the Baker High School student to rack up tardies as her grades slipped.

The schools attendance team sprang into action, starting with simple measures: a phone call home, a letter. When those didnt work, they sent Coach Charles Harris, a school employee who often meets with students, to talk to Toldert. She said sleeping in was causing her to miss class, so they agreed that she would start setting a daily alarm clock.

That simple conversationand the practical solution it generatedproved to be effective.
