More Americans have enrolled their children in charter schools in the years since the coronavirus pandemic upended education, according to new data—at a time when enrollment at traditional public schools is continuing to decline.

Enrollment at charter schools increased by 492,210 students (14.69 percent) nationwide from the 2019-2020 school year to the 2024-2025 school year, according to preliminary data from the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools that was provided to Newsweek. The nonprofit describes itself as “committed to advancing the charter school movement.”

Charter schools are allowed to operate in almost all states and the District of Columbia. Like traditional public schools, they are tuition-free and publicly funded. However, they operate independently of other public schools under a contract, or charter, with the state or local government. This allows flexibility when it comes to curriculum and other standards.

The 12 metrics traversed the themes of access, quality, and resources and economic support and they were graded out of 100.

West Virginia has the highest rate of graduation among public high school students, according to data from the National Center for Education Statistics.

With score of higher than 90 percent, the state led the way on public high school graduation, with Tennessee, Kentucky, Wisconsin and Massachusetts close behind. Newsweek has contacted the Department of Education via email for comment.

High school graduation rates in the country have been on the rise based on NCES data. Between 2011 to 2012, the average adjusted cohort graduation rate for public high school students was 80 percent, but in 2021 to 2022, that number was 87 percent.

The charge against cell phones in U.S. schools is growing, with numerous states bringing in restrictions on children having devices on them during education hours.

Proponents of tighter cell restrictions in schools argue that it benefits student attainment and improves mental health.

But some have raised safety concerns, highlighting that bans could prevent students from contacting family members during an emergency, and argue that promoting healthier device use could better teach children to manage their screen time.

San Francisco’s public high schools will implement a sweeping change to their grading system this fall, replacing traditional methods with a policy that allows students to pass with scores as low as 41 percent.

The initiative, part of a broader “Grading for Equity” push, is stirring concern among educators, students and parents over academic standards and college readiness.

Similar policies across other Bay Area districts—such as Dublin, Oakland and Pleasanton—have seen mixed results and strong community reactions. Dublin Unified attempted a pilot of equity grading in 2023, which included removing zeros for missed assignments and awarding a minimum of 50 percent for any “reasonably attempted” work.

Short attention spans, an overdependence on technology and a lack of interest in learning are all things that Generation Alpha has been accused of having.

The demographic, born between the 2010s and the mid 2020s, is entering a world of education that is radically different than their Generation Z predecessors. Hit by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic as young children, Generation Alpha is going through school at a time when technology is more ubiquitous in education than ever before.

And if the discourse on social media is to be believed, their journey into education has been anything but seamless, with teachers and social media creators sounding the alarm on Generation Alpha and their relationship with learning and technology.

Conservative school board candidates saw a string of defeats in parts of Texas where voters had backed President Donald Trump in November.

In recent years, school boards, usually nonpartisan, have become political battlegrounds in broader culture wars. Conservatives have targeted public education, arguing that parents should have more control over what their children learn at school.

The elections took place in Texas as Governor Greg Abbott signed a $1 billion school voucher program, which will use public dollars to fund private school tuition, into law. Republican lawmakers who support the bill say it will give parents more choice by letting them pull their children out of underperforming public schools, while critics see it as draining financial resources from the state’s public schools.
