An educator with experience advising the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) believes its time to sue the state agency if it doesnt do more to reduce racial imbalances in public schools.

They still have an opportunity before someone files a lawsuit, said Dr. Raul Fernandez, the former chair of DESEs Racial Imbalance Advisory Council (RAIC). My great hope was that we would have leaders that would actually step up and meet this moment, and it just hasn’t happened. So, it seems we’re on the path that many other communities have found themselves whether it be cities or states on the path toward some kind of court involvement.

In June, Dr. Fernandez and his colleagues on the advisory council released a report called Racial Segregation in Massachusetts Schools. It reveals that 63% of the Commonwealths public schools meet the councils definition of segregated. That means more than 500,000 students are educated in school environments considered racially imbalanced and the RAIC says the law requires education leaders to do something about it even if they didnt create the imbalance.

After more than two weeks of being away, students in Newton, Massachusetts, are returning to the classroom on Monday.

Teachers voted on Sunday to ratify their new contract with the district.

All in all, 11 missed school days and 15 days on the picket line, and now teachers, students and staff will be making their way to the class Monday morning with a one-hour late start.

Students in Newton, Massachusetts, are now entering their sixth day out of the classroom, as teachers in the district take their battle to City Hall.

However, things are moving from the picket line to the courtroom on Friday and students are expected to get involved.

There’s been a big change to the mood in Newton. There was a lot of optimism Wednesday night but as of Thursday night, there was anger and frustration.
