Kentucky education commissioner discusses new K3 Dyslexia Toolkit

The Kentucky Department of Education has released a K3 Dyslexia Toolkit that provides educators and families with a resource to help meet learning needs of students with dyslexia, or those who display characteristics of dyslexia. This 20-page document comes in response to the Ready to Read Act, which directed KDE to develop and share a toolkit that school districts and educators can use to help serve students with dyslexia.

West Virginia state superintendent backs pay bump to boost math teaching skills

State Schools Superintendent Steve Paine supports a one-time pay incentive for educators who aren't certified to teach math, but are teaching it anyway, to increase their math education skills, and for elementary school teachers to also improve their math pedagogy. Last school year, only about 37 percent of tested public school students scored as at least proficient in math, and the proficiency percentage for high school juniors was only 29 percent.

Education Department investigating alleged discrimination of Native American students in Montana

The Education Department's Office for Civil Rights will investigate allegations that a public school system in Montana discriminated against Native American students, according to its recent letter responding to the complaint. The complaint alleges that discrimination included dozens of instances of bullying, racial slurs and disproportionate discipline of students who are not white.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott appoints Parkland parent to state Board of Education

The father of a student shot and killed during the Parkland school massacre has been appointed to the state Board of Education. An advocate for school safety, 52-year-old Andy Pollack is seeking accountability as well as better pay for teachers and close scrutiny of how money for schools is spent.

Florida Supreme Court rejects lawsuit claiming education is not high quality’

A sharply divided Florida Supreme Court is rejecting a lawsuit claiming the state isn't living up to its constitutional requirement to provide a high quality education for all. The ruling ends a nearly decade-long lawsuit challenging school funding, which was filed by parents, students and advocacy groups.
