The $23.4 billion spending plan for education also would continue free breakfast and lunches for all students at a cost of $200 million. Free meals for students was first included in the current budget, and it鈥檚 something Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has wanted to make permanent.

The overall $82.5 billion state budget for 2025 was approved early Thursday, June 27, by lawmakers during an overnight session. It now heads to Whitmer鈥檚 desk for her signature.

District leaders say the closures will help right-size GRPS for a smaller student body and ensure resources are equitably distributed across the district. GRPS enrollment has fallen by nearly 30% over the last 15 years, which means many school buildings are half-empty.

At 959.9, the average score dropped 36.1 points below the previous year, and set the lowest mark in the state since the test was implemented statewide in the 2015-16 school year, according to information released Aug. 31 by聽. The score was also 47.7 points lower than the all-time high average of 1007.6, set in 2016-17.

Parks鈥� appointment was approved unanimously by the school board Wednesday, Oct. 11, after a brief discussion and universal praise for her growth and experience as an administrator. Her appointment is subject to contract negotiations with an effective date of replacing outgoing Superintendent Jeanice Swift to be determined.

Parks has been a principal, executive director and most recently has served an assistant superintendent since 2020, where she worked in developing and maintaining educational programs and services.
