Louisiana teachers unions and other school advocates want more details about how Gov. Jeff Landry intends to keep his promise to avoid a teacher pay cut this year.

鈥淯ntil we get more details, we still have quite a few questions,鈥 Larry Carter, president of the Louisiana Federation of Teachers, said in an interview Friday. 鈥淲e don鈥檛 know how it鈥檚 going to be done, when it鈥檚 going to be done, we don鈥檛 know any of that yet.鈥

The Louisiana Legislature approved a budget plan Friday that leaves public school teachers and support workers with less money for the 2026-27 school year. Lawmakers did not renew the $2,000 and $1,000 annual pay stipends teachers and staff have received, respectively, for the past three years.

Four civil liberties groups will sue the state of Louisiana after Republican Gov. Jeff Landry signed a law Wednesday that calls for the Ten Commandments to be displayed in school classrooms. The new rule applies to any school that accepts state money, including colleges and universities.

The American Civil Liberties Union, its Louisiana chapter, Americans United for Separation of Church and State and the Freedom from Religion Foundation announced they intend to file a lawsuit to block enforcement of House Bill 71. The measure, authored by Rep. Dodie Horton, R-Haughton, requires the Ten Commandments be displayed in each classroom. The poster or framed document dimensions must be at least 11 inches by 14 inches.

Speaking at a Republican Party fundraiser in Tennessee over the weekend, Landry said he intended to sign the Ten Commandments bill into law, 鈥渁nd I can鈥檛 wait to be sued.鈥

Louisiana鈥檚 controversial Recovery School District (RSD) has been nearly dormant for a decade, but it might be making a comeback.

State Superintendent of Education Cade Brumley wants to put the Recovery system to more use and suggested he take over more public schools from local authorities.

鈥淲e believe that there is an opportunity here to help students and help families who are in these historically failing schools,鈥 Brumley told state legislators during a budget hearing this month. 鈥淪o moving forward, we are going to be more assertive with our RSD work to make sure every student has access to a high quality school.鈥
