New York City public school students wont be allowed to use their phones or smartwatches during the school day this fall under a new citywide policy announced Wednesday.

Mayor Eric Adams and Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos said the rule aims to limit distractions and protect students mental health. It aligns with a new state law and was approved by the citys Panel for Educational Policy, officials said.

The updated policy applies to all personal internet-enabled devices, including smartphones, tablets and smartwatches, City Hall said. Students can still bring devices to school, but they must be turned off and stored during the day, according to a press release.

New York Citys incoming schools chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos said Sunday she wants to get to the root of why so many students are missing class, amid new data demonstrating a statewide absentee crisis and a class action lawsuit that claims the city is failing to provide sufficient educational access to students with mental health issues.

Speaking in a conversation with Mayor Eric Adams on his WBLS 107.5 radio show Sunday, Aviles-Ramos said she knows first-hand about the barriers keeping kids from school because of her experience growing up in the Bronx and struggling to afford essentials like food and clothing.

Sometimes we didn’t know where our meals were going to come from. The community helped us get coats and food, she said. So we need to figure out what those barriers are and work family-to-family and help bring the kids to school.

Yamia Bermudez knows who to blame for the rough treatment she and other students experienced at Newarks School of Global Studies, which was singled outanti-Blackness and other deficit beliefs prevalent in the school.

I believe the parents are responsible for it all, Bermudez said. She said shes spoken at school board meetings about anti-Black, anti-gay and anti-trans slurs by classmates. I feel like, as a child, technically, it’s not my place to fix stuff that was here before I was here. I should not have to be facing these issues headfirst because my school didn’t want to address issues of racism.
