The era of artificial intelligence has arrived in Connecticut classrooms, but the rules to tackle it aren’t exactly keeping pace.

While the state works on a uniform playbook for AI in K12 schools, districts are making their own calls on everything from lesson plan use to cheating—creating a fast-evolving, erratic AI landscape across Connecticut schools.

From Westport to Torrington and other towns in between, CT Insider looked at certain school districts across the state to see how they are handling AI, the differences between one district to the next, and the state’s plans for managing the emerging technology in education going forward.

Hundreds of Connecticut teachers are facing persistent burnout and worsening conditions, driving the ongoing educator shortage, according to a new survey by the state’s largest teachers’ union.

In a survey released Sept. 15 by the Connecticut Education Association, about 1,000 educators across the state reported issues including high stress, poor working conditions, low salaries, increased student behavioral challenges and a lack of support as the new school year began.

“The stress, the workload, what’s going on is starting to really wear on our teachers,” said Kate Dias, president of the Connecticut Education Association. “This is not a low-stakes, low-pressure profession. It is a high-stakes, high-pressure profession.”

A statewide change to the cutoff date for kindergarten entrance has Connecticut school districts planning for a backlog of pre-schoolers, a shortage of kindergartners and a new, uncertain exemption process.

As of next fall, all students entering kindergarten must be 5 years old by Sept. 1, after a new state law  up four months from Jan. 1. That means thousands of students with fall birthdays who would have been eligible to start school in 2024-25 will instead have to wait an additional year.
