As President Donald Trump prepares to order the dismantling of the Department of Education, the financial arm of the agency鈥攚hich makes loans directly to borrowers and manages trillions of dollars in student debt鈥攆aces an uncertain future, with steep staff cuts and lack of communication exacerbating the uncertainty, according to interviews with more than a dozen current and former department employees.

The $1.64 trillion financial portfolio is managed separately from the department鈥檚 policy apparatus, the latter of which Trump has sought to wind down or reassign to other agencies. But Trump acknowledged Thursday that the massive loan balance was a complicating factor in his effort to shutter the agency.

The proposal, which requires parents to report their immigration or citizenship status when enrolling their children in school, came as President Donald Trump and Republican leaders pledged to crack down on undocumented immigrants and carry out a mass deportation plan.

In just over a month in power, the Trump administration has sent troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, deported migrants to Guantanamo Bay and moved to strip temporary protections for certain migrants.

When a student carried out a shooting at Abundant Life Christian School this week, there was no school resource officer on site. And when six people were killed last year at another private Christian school in Nashville, there wasn鈥檛 one either.

While school resource officers are not the only way to secure a school, and best practices to keep students safe on campus are similar among all schools in the United States, experts told CNN it can be challenging for some private schools to cover their security costs.

鈥淩arely do we see a circumstance where a private school is able to house a school resource officer and that鈥檚 for a variety of reasons. It鈥檚 something the private school would have to self-fund,鈥 said Mo Canady, executive director of the National Association of School Resource Officers, a nonprofit group of school-based security professionals.

The lawsuit filed Thursday with the Oklahoma Supreme Court also asks the court to stop Republican State Superintendent Ryan Walters from spending $3 million to purchase Bibles in support of his mandate.

The suit alleges the mandate violates the Oklahoma Constitution because it involves spending public money to support religion and favors one religion over another by requiring the use of a Protestant version of the Bible. When my friends and I walked into homeroom on the first day of school this year, my teacher told all of us to put our phones in a black plastic box on an old desk by the classroom door.

Handing over our phones during class is an official school policy, and my teachers always make this announcement at the beginning of the school year. But teachers would usually forget about the box by third period on the first day, never to be mentioned again by the second day of school. This year, however, the policy stuck that entire first day 鈥 and every day since.

I asked my Latin teacher why the school was suddenly getting so strict on phones. It turns out that over the summer most of the teachers had read social psychologist Jonathan Haidt鈥檚 book 鈥: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness.鈥
