]]> As Arkansas educators prepare their classrooms for students return this month, many will spend hundreds of dollars on materials that supplement supplies parents purchase for their children.

The Arkansas LEARNS Act, a major education overhaul championed by Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, raised the base pay for teachers to $50,000. But teachers say the pay increase isnt enough when they still use personal funds for classroom expenses throughout the year.

Leron McAdoo typically spends at least $300 of his own money each year on utilitarian supplies for his classroom, such as educational and motivational posters, electrical cords and tape to display student work. He doesnt expect this year to be any different, especially as he works to stock a new classroom.

]]> Throughout rural America, non-native English speakers are less likely than their urban peers to get proper support in school, sometimes leading to a lifetime of lower educational attainment. But some rural schools are developing multilingual education strategies to rival those found in urban and suburban districts.

In general, its easier to fund more diverse course offerings in bigger schools. From Advanced Placement U.S. History to Spanish immersion, more students means more funding. But in rural DuBois County, Indiana, administrators are prioritizing English-learner education. There, students have access to gold standard multilingual programming, a hard-won achievement for any U.S. school, but especially for such a small district.

We are the only school in the region who started a dual language program, said Rossina Sandoval, Southwest DuBois County School Districts director of community engagement, in an interview with the Daily Yonder.

]]> A grassroots coalition on Wednesday announced its intention to refer to the 2024 ballot a measure to amend the education clause of the Arkansas Constitution.

The proposed measure is supported by For AR Kids, a coalition that includes the Arkansas Education Association, Arkansas Conference of the NAACP, Arkansas Public Policy Panel, Citizens First Congress and Citizens for Arkansas Public Education and Students (CAPES).

According to a press release, the measure will propose the following changes:

  • Require any school receiving public funds to follow the same standards that traditional public schools are required to follow.
  • Establish the minimum quality standards ordered by the Arkansas Supreme Court in its 2022 Lake View decision.
  • Guarantee voluntary universal access to pre-K for 3 and 4-year-olds, afterschool and summer time programming, quality special education and wrap-around services for children within 200% of the Federal Poverty Line.
