Applying to college was always the plan for AnDrue Perkins of Fairfield, but you know how it is. Things get in the way, like playing point guard in a winning basketball season.
Fortunately for Perkins, he lives in the new era of “direct admissions.” So even though he never applied to college, the perfect college still found him. While other high school seniors were getting their acceptance letters last spring, Menlo College in Atherton was emailing Perkins to say he’d been preapproved for admission.
“It made me super happy,” said Perkins, 18, especially when he realized that Menlo needed only his transcript. Direct admissions bypasses the usual application process, and many colleges waive such requirements as the personal essay. “I mean, I like writing, but when I saw that I didn’t have to write an essay, I was like, yeah. I’m feeling good.”
