The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) has opened the application period for the STARTALK teacher training program in Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia. Up to 50 prospective teachers of languages that are not yet widely taught in the U.S. as well as a limited number of Spanish teachers for dual-language or immersion programs will be selected in those states. Educators must apply for the program, part of the federal government’s National Security Language Initiative, by May 15.
The International Literacy Association (ILA) is offering equity scholarships for educators to attend its 2019 conference, to be held October 10-13 in New Orleans. Each recipientwho must live within 100 miles of New Orleans and demonstrate experience, dedication and needwill receive a complimentary two-day registration and a stipend for related expenses. Applications are due April 30.

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) President Robert Berry is disappointed in the administration’s recent budget proposal that could eliminate many federal investments in education, including Title II-A and Title IV-A of the Every Student Succeeds Act. He said in a statement: This plan would cut the already inadequate funds that provide professional development, teacher preparation, classroom instruction, and the many other programs, services and expertise that nurture successful teaching and learning.
The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) will introduce its Argument-Driven Inquiry in Third-Grade Science: Three-Dimensional Investigations guide next month; a similar guide for fourth-grade science students will be published later this year. The NSTA Press guides include field-tested lessons, teacher notes, investigation handouts, and student questions ranging from how the climate changes (third grade) to how to make an electric car move faster (fourth grade).
